Whale of a Time with Emily Burridge
Emily BurridgeEMILY is an outstanding classically trained ‘cellist and inovative composer. She is a renowned master of her instrument, unique in her ability to improvise and cross genres of classical and contemporary music. She is a much in demand session player, and has worked with Roger Daltrey, George Michael, Chrissie Hind, Jools Holland, Zero 7, Stereophonics and Hans Zimmer to name a few, and is featured on numerous albums and film soundtracks. She regularly performs a duo with Pedal Steel Guitarist BJ Cole and together they have developed a program including arrangements of works by Debussy, Copland, Satie as well as their own compositions. Outside of England Emily’s experiences of the country Brazil has had a major influence on her productions over the years....read on!

Emily’s new live solo performance "Bach,Burridge & into the Amazon". This performance is an audible biography of musical experience. Emily innovatively combines the early classical with the contemporary. Selected movements from the Dance Suites for unaccompanied ’cello by J.S. Bach are interwoven with her own compositions in which she utilises modern sampling technology, creating exciting multi layered pieces in a live setting. In “into the Amazon" she is inspired by and accompanies her recordings from the natural environment of the forests in Brazil and Xavante Indian traditional songs. You tube excerpt of performance:"Bach, Burridge..." The performance opens with the "Prelude" of the G major suite by J.S.Bach. Then, utilising the looping technology to provide a "pedal" note on G Emily continues with"Salutation", a way of greeting the audience with her own composition. She then almost imperceptbly returns to Bach performing the "Allemande" from the G major suite.

Watch a video called "Rain Man Sings" with Emily Burridge playing the cello!

"Rain Man Sings" Video features Emily performing her "into the Amazon" live solo production and footage taken by Emily when she last visited and stayed with the Xavante. This video is Emily’s passionate response to having witnessed the devastating effect of the Soya cultivation in the Mato Grosso of Brazil and her awareness of it’s impact on the indigenous group that she has periodically visited during the last fourteen years. The backing track of "Rain Man Sings" features a Xavante Indian "calling" the rain, a recording made by Emily once when she was staying with the tribe.
